How to Register Your Nickname
By Elly

All right, so you're connected to IRC. You've found a nickname that you like, and you want to keep it. To prevent other people from using it, you have to register it with the Nickname Service, NickServ. If you want to prevent someone else from registering your nickname, registering it is easy. Once a nickname is registered, anyone who wants to use it must enter a password. To register a nickname, you must already be using that nickname, and it must be currently unregistered. The command to register your nickname is: /nickserv register password e-mail

For example:
Example of Nickname Registration

Once this is done, you will see something like this:
Successful Nickname Registration

After you register your nick, every time you connect, NickServ will prompt you for your password:
NickServ Password Prompt

You simply enter your password, like so:
NickServ Identify Example

If you don't want to do this every time, there is an easier way: Using mIRC's "perform" option. Click "Tools", then "Options". Then, click the + next to "Connect", and select Options. Click the "Perform" button:
Locating the Perform button

You should now see a window somewhat like this:
mIRC Perform Window

Click "Add", then find "UtoNet". If "UtoNet" is not in the list, please see the "Getting Connected" tutorial. After you add it to the list, select it from the dropdown box. mIRC will do any command that you enter in the text field below. Enter the command to identify in that field - /nickserv identify password like so:
Filled in mIRC Perform window
Hit okay, and you are done. =)
